January 27, 2009 - Sparks Announces Computer Based Certification for Pesticide Applicators

MONTGOMERY - Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries Ron Sparks announces that the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) now offers computer based testing for certification of pesticide applicators.

A primary responsibility of the ADAI Certification and Training Office is the licensing of pest management professionals. In the past, the department accomplished this by providing applicator examinations on a quarterly basis at four monitored sites with all examinations being graded internally by hand.  Hard copy/paper based examinations were the only method for an applicator to take an examination in the category or categories he or she wanted to perform work.

Now a paperless and more efficient option is available by using computers.  Testers will be free to take the test Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and in some cases evening examinations are possible.  The testing centers are located in geographically advantageous sites throughout the state to provide convenience for test takers.  Testing centers are located in Athens, Tanner, Hanceville, Birmingham, Auburn, Dothan, and Mobile.  Instant pass/fail notification and test scores by category are provided at testing centers.

“Giving applicators the opportunity to take examinations by computer throughout the state is a huge accomplishment for our Pesticide Management Section,” said Sparks.  “They have worked hard to make it happen and they have succeeded.  Computer based testing will allow applicators the convenience of taking the test in or near their home county and receiving instant scoring results.  It is estimated that this change will save the state more than $44,000 annually that otherwise would have been spent to prepare and administer paper based tests.”

CDA pesticide applicator exam goes high-tech

Colorado

The Colorado Department of Agriculture is proud to announce that two new online services are now available to those needing a Private Pesticide Applicator license.

PPA exam

Those wishing to receive a PPA license may choose between a mail-in test and a new online exam.  The online version is available at www.cppatesting.com. Those taking the test may exit and re-enter the exam at any time during a 30 day period.  The manual can also be downloaded and printed for future reference.

"Last year, more than 2,200 people took the Private Pesticide Applicator license test and we are thrilled to be able to offer a flexible, convenient, and secure alternative to the mail-in exam," said Laura Pottorff, CDA's pesticide applicator coordinator.

License payment

The second feature now available is an online payment option for the test and license.  Fees include $20 for the exam and $75 for a three year license. After the initial exam with CDA, licensees may renew online for $75. PPA fees may be paid at www.colorado.gov/ag/dpi.

All persons in the state who use pesticides are regulated by the Colorado Department of Agriculture.  The goals of the Pesticide Applicator Program are to ensure that private and commercial pesticide applicators have the requisite knowledge to handle and apply pesticides, and to ensure that pesticides are applied in a manner which reduces unnecessary associated hazards.  To meet the goals of the program, the department conducts exams, issues licenses, and requires technician training and continuing education.

The program covers the certification of private pesticide applicators that use restricted use pesticides, commercial applicators, and some businesses and public agencies that do their own pesticide applications.
